Invitation to Apply for Admission to the
Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists

On the recommendation of the Secretary for Food & Health, the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry (HKSCC) has formally appointed the Board of Accreditation (BOA) in early 1993 with the objective of providing a mechanism for regulating standards pertaining to the professional practice of Clinical Biochemistry in Hong Kong. According to the Articles of Association of HKSCC, Accredited Clinical Biochemists are eligible to apply to be promoted to the class of Fellow Membership of the Society. This is a new class of members formed by the HKSCC in 1999 in recognition of the professional status of those who are accredited by the Board of Accreditation of the Society. The Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists will be updated and lodged with the Food & Health Bureau annually.

Members who has passed the Accreditation Examination can apply for admission to the Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists. The Accreditation Examination consists of two written papers and a viva examination. The formats of three examinations are listed in the following table.

Application Form

The intending candidates should satisfy the following requirements before his/her admission to the examination:

  1. The candidate should be a member of the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry holding a relevant degree;
  2. The candidate should possess not less than 3 years of relevant experience in Clinical Biochemistry. Certification from the candidate's department head or advisor on his/her experience is required. Other forms of professional competence may be considered (e.g. published work).

Members possessing the following qualifications and experience may be exempted from all or part of the Accreditation Examination.

Full exemption:

  1. Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK), or Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Pathologists, and having passed the examination of respective College in Chemical Pathology; OR
  2. Holder of Mastership in Clinical Biochemistry, UK; OR
  3. Fellow of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (FAACB); Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FCACB); Diplomate of American Board of Clinical Chemists (DABCC); OR
  4. Member of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MAACB) with a doctoral degree obtained in a relevant field.

Partial exemption: Viva examination only

  1. Member of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MAACB); OR
  2. Holder of a doctoral degree in the field of Clinical Biochemistry or related discipline and having practised in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than ten years; OR
  3. Having demonstrated competence through published work or other attainment and having practised in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than ten years.

Partial exemption: One written paper plus viva examination

  1. Holder of a master degree in the field of Clinical Biochemistry or related discipline and having practiced in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than two years.

Decisions of the Board of Accreditation regarding granting of exemption from accreditation examination not listed above

The Board of Accreditation has the right to consider on individual cases that are not covered in the above list and its decisions shall be final.

Deadline of application is the end of July in each year. The application form can be downloaded from the HKSCC website (http://www.medicine.org.hk/hkscc/index.htm). Completed application forms, all supporting documents, an application fee of HK$200 and an examination fee of HK$1,800 (cheque should be made payable to Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry) should reach the Registrar of the BOA before the application deadline. Both applicants admitted to the examinations and applicants granted full exemption are required to pay the examination fee of $1,800. The application fee and examination fee are non-refundable.
