Mission

The Hong Kong Association of Critical Care Nurses (HKACCN) exists as a non-profit, speciality organisation, dedicated to promoting quality and cost-effective care for critically ill patients, and strengthening ties with their families and the community on achieving the purpose. This is accomplished through health education to the public and healthcare professionals; promotion of research activities to support evidence-based nursing practice; implementation of agreed practice standards of critical care nursing.


Objective

  • To define and promote the standards of critical care nursing practice.

  • To provide critical care nurses with educational opportunities in the form of continuing nursing education.

  • To support and facilitate critical care nursing research.

  • To work collaboratively with other health-related organisations towards the improvement of critical care.

  • To provide rapid information dissemination and effective communication networks to and on behalf of critical care nurses.

Regular Academic Program

1) Electrocardiogram (ECG) Course

  • The aim of the course is to provide basic concept on ECG for nurses who need to take care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
  • 2-hour session for 6 evening sessions
  • Lectures only
  • Hold 3-4 course per year

2) Elementary Critical Care Nursing (ECCN) Program

  • The aim of the course is to provide basic concept on knowledge related to Intensive Care Nursing to junior and inexperienced nurses who need to take care of the critically ill patients in ICUs or HDUs.
  • Three modules (Respiratory Care, CVS Care and Neuro-Reno-Trauma Care) are composed in this program.
  • Each module consists of 2-hour session for 8 evening sessions
  • Lectures only
  • Each module holds once a year.

3) Medical Putonghua (醫學普通話班) :

  • 本課程旨在提高醫療人員的普通話溝通能力及技巧,特別針對醫療人員如醫生、護士、物理治療師、接待員等。
  • 內容包括:基礎拼音、拼讀;時事討論;課本研讀;日常及醫學會話;醫學名詞及詞彙
  • 小組形色
  • 共十節,每節三小時
  • 每年舉辨三至四班

4) Health Assessment:

  • Health Assessment Courses is designed to help frontline nurses to acquire knowledge about assessing health of the critically ill patients.
  • Contents include health assessment of various systems, interpretation of laboratory findings, Chest x-ray & CT brain interpretation, echocardiogram and pain & trauma assessment.
  • 2-hour session for 8 evening sessions
  • Lectures only

5) Basic Life Support (BLS) / Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course

  • The HKACCN is now working jointly with the Laerdal China in running the BLS Provider Course & ACLS Provider Course (of the American Heart Association) for all health care professionals (doctors, nurses, paramedics) in Hong Kong, China and Macau. The course incorporates theory and practical skills in managing cardiac arrest and other critical cardio-respiratory emergencies. It consists of lectures, demonstrations and small group skill stations.
  • Participants are expected to possess basic knowledge of ECG interpretation and are strongly recommended to read the manual before the course.
  • There have been major changes in the ACLS protocol. This ACLS provider course is adopting the new guideline according to the "Guideline 2005 for CPR and ECC".
  • Come and join this program to keep abreast of the current treatment modality in the field of resuscitation.
  • This course will be held a 10-12 times a year.

6) Seminars

  • Guest speakers (e.g. doctors, nurses) will be invited to give lectures on a specific topic related to ICU aspect.
  • Usually one evening (2-3 hours) program.
  • Hold 5-6 seminars per year
